As Director of George Washington University’s Institute for Public Diplomacy and Global Communication, it has been my pleasure to continue IPDGC’s partnership with the People’s Republic of China in hosting a week-long program for PRC spokespeople on press-state relations in the United States. In November 2009, IPDGC conducted its third program for the PRC, in cooperation with the Chinese Embassy inWashington, D.C. The program was a wonderful opportunity for PRC spokespeople to learn more about theU.S.media and government relationship, and was a great success. During the 2009 program, program participants heard lectures from important GW scholars on the history and practice of media coverage of government. Frank Sesno, the director of the School of Media and Public Affairs at GW, and a long-time CNN anchor and correspondent, opened the program with a multi-media talk about the changing media landscape in America, with a particular focus on how traditional (or“old”) media are being challenged by and adapting to a“new”media environment. Other speakers included former State Department officials, online media editors, and political consultants. IPDGC’s program for the PRC spokespeople also included visits to government offices to talk to their American counterparts in the press offices. This included a visit to Capitol Hill, where participants heard from two press officers forU.S.congressmen, followed by a tour of the Capitol. Later in the week, participants visited the U.S. Department of Agriculture to talk to a press officer there, and to the State Department. The week was capped by a media training with two experts in the field. This was a real highlight of the program, as participants were able to not only learn important skills for talking to the media on camera, but were also able to do mock interviews in the SMPA studio and see the results on screen. This was a great learning experience and a lot of fun, as well. As IPDGC director, I look forward to continuing this program in the future. I see this as an excellent opportunity for our two countries to learn more about each other and to build stronger relationships that will endure for decades to come. U.S.-China relations are probably the most important bi-lateral relationship in the 21st Century, and cooperative programs like this will be a part of strengthening our ties. Sean Aday (Director, Institute for Public Diplomacy and Global Communication Associate Professor of Media and International Affairs GeorgeWashington University)
